Today Steam announced Greenlight. Now what is it? Well it's a new system that enlists the community's help in picking some of the next games to be released on Steam. It lets developers post information, screenshots, and videos for their game and seek a critical mass of community support in order to get selected for distribution. Also it's a new way to get feedback from potential customers and a way to build an active community.

How it normally works is that any game designer can submit their work for inclusion on the Steam store, but it can take a long time until it gets approved (if it even gets approved). Now Steam is approaching this from a different angle: The community should be deciding what gets released. Getting their game on the Steam store means a lot for a game developer and can get them some money out of the work they did on it.
We know there is still a lot of room for improvement in making Steam distribution easier and faster; this is just a first step in that direction.
When can I start using this? Steam Greenlight is slated to launch at the end of August.
