STEAM EXPANDS BEYOND GAMES

Steam gears up to launch a range of "Software" Titles on September the 5th!!

Valve have today announce that their famous Steam game distribution platform will from September also act as a software distribution system as well.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity and many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

The initial roll out will be limited with more Software titles to follow, developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight, once their software reaches a critical mass of support, Valve will work to make it available via Steam.

"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

So, what do you think Bananaites?

Could you imagine your software downloadable via steam?

What big name titles do you think will be in the launch?

Is this the next big thing to counter software piracy?

I see you didn't even readed whole article above, there was asked question about piracy -_-

a lot of games REQUIRE steam to even run it, your argument is invalid.

Please, peoples sticked "dumb" give me arguments I'm wrong.

first point, read about new terms of use they changed and what that means for players.

    just one link link

Second, piracy is still growing with every next year, soon, when 3d printers will be more complicated and cheeper so it will be available for anyone, risk of "piracing" real things is very high, even now you can download models to print.

    link1 link2

First Valve doesn't force you to use their services. Is not a monopoly, there are a lot of plataforms where you can buy games online. For example: GreenmanGaming, who gives you the chance to sell the products that you've purchased in their store; other examples would be Good Old Games (GOG), Direct2Drive (D2D), Gamestop Impulse, Gamersgate and of course Origin and Games for Windows – Live. If you don't happy with Steam and their terms, you can choose other plataform for buy games.

Second, Valve is not doing this on its own initiative or to combat piracy, they make it for the demand of their customers (us). So your argument about piracy is irrelevant.

Awesome! As always Valve does, they listen to his customers. :D

Except when the next Half Life is involved.

Yeah except for that hehe Well actually we can't know if they hear about that 'cause they don't say anything about it. I mean maybe are developing Half-Life 3 or maybe not.

Suuuuurree, as they changed "a bit" terms of use few days before, and if you won't agree with new terms your account will be deleted and everything you had on it will easly disapear, just gone.

And now they want to add softwares. Ok... SCUMBAG STEAM - you buy 3ds max for 3,500$ and without accepting terms of use you can say goodbye with your freshly bought 3ds max. (for example)

NO WAY ! GABE, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE !

"Is this the next big thing to counter software piracy?" These means nothing to piracy, There was, there is and there will be piracy, nothing will change that thing, even most compicated DRM's

Steam is a bitch, I probably should have read the TOS last time it was shown to me, I just assumed it was one of those "We rub your face with this every now and again because we feel like it" things, I just spam the agree button anytime the scroll bar is so small you can't see the little lines in the middle of it. Something tells me, steam will probably close down in 4 years or so when Gabe dies of a heartass attack.
